Tommy’s Gonna Run But Not A Ton

Since last season ended, there have been a lot of pundits that believe the Nebraska football season is only going to be successful if Tommy Armstrong runs the ball more. The coaching staff agrees, to a point.

During the fall practice’s first scrimmage this weekend, Tommy Armstrong carried the ball a couple of times and looked rather good doing it. That running game from the quarterback position included a 25-yard scamper for a touchdown.

People who got to watch the run close up said the blocking was good enough and the defense was caught off guard enough, that Tommy was able to job into the end zone. After the scrimmage, Riley made it clear he was going to run though with Armstrong, though not that often. According to KWBE, Riley talked about that play after the scrimmage and said  using the QB keeper was “a great weapon used wisely — and probably not overused.”

Keep in mind it makes sense not to be running Tommy all that much considering the team is still relatively thin at the quarterback position. Tommy Armstrong has taken quite a bit of abuse over the years and the coaches are wanting to keep him as healthy as possible this season.
