There’s Still No Clear Number 1 Running Back

Nebraska football fans who were hoping the front runner in the three, or four-man running back race would emerge right away are going to be disappointed. Neither Terrell Newby, Devine Ozigbo, Mikale Wilbon or even Tre Bryant have managed to grab the starting RB job so far.

  • That likely means Newby would be the “starter” if the season were to start this Saturday. Of course, the lack of a real leader in this race more than likely means we’re going to see a runningback by committee approach for a while.

That hasn’t always been a bad thing in Nebraska football history. Remember the “We Backs”? We might be seeing a different version of that. At this point, the coaches have had good things to say about every single one of the ball carriers looking to start.

The coaches have said they are giving all three of the backs the same amount of reps in practice. This means we may not be seeing a 1,000 yard rusher this year, but we could be seeing three guys who are all able to go for over 500 yards. Mike Riley has said the Nebraska football team is going to focus more on the running game. That should be a bonus for everyone wanting carries.
