Shavon Shields probably knows he’s not going to have an easy road to hoe in order to make his way to the NBA.

At the same time, it’s a safe bet the former Nebraska Cornhusker basketball player was hoping for a better NBA Summer League debut than the one he had Saturday night. Playing his first game for the Orlando Blue, the former Husker forward was among the team leaders in minutes played.

Despite being one of the better players on the team, he scored just two points on 1-4 shooting. Shields also had two rebounds and two assists. In his defense, it doesn’t appear many players on the Blue had a very good night.

The Orlando Blue took on the NBA Summer League version of the Indiana Pacers and lost the game 93-66. Such a bad loss is likely yet another strike against the player who has his work cut out for him if he wants to really catch the eyes of the teams that fund these developmental league games.

For those who don’t know, this round of NBA Summer League games takes place from July 2 to July 8. There is another round of games starting on July 8 and lasting until July 18. The point of these exhibition games is for former college and Internation players to show off their skills to NBA execs and overseas front office staffers.

Shavon Shields has said his goal is to make the NBA but if he has to go the International route, he’ll do that too. The former Huskers hasn’t yet said just how many of the developmental leagues he plans to participate in this summer.

The first time he played in a post graduate developmental league like this one, he did quite a bit better. The Omaha World-Herald reports he averaged 13.7 points and shot 56.7 percent from the field in the Portsmouth Invitational.
