Nebraska Baseball’s Pitching Staff is the Secret Weapon For Long Postseason Run

For the Nebraska Baseball team, Scott Schreiber has been the talk of the town, but his teammates such as Derek Burkamper and Matt Waldron deserve some pub as well.

While the Husker offense has been leading the charge in the last few victories for sure, there’s very little doubt that a pitching staff that was struggling early in the season has righted the ship. That’s going to be crucial for Darin Erstad’s boys when it comes to getting deep into the postseason. Make no mistake about it, after early season doubts about whether this Nebraska baseball team has the horses to compete with the big boys, they most certainly do.

Having the horses doesn’t mean this is going to be an easy run. That run is made easier with a 1-2-3 pitching staff that counts as one of the best in the Big Ten. The Huskers have a long history of their best teams having a rotation that can go toe-to-toe with anyone. The trio of Burkamper, Waldron, and Jake Meyers evoke the glory days when names like Komine and Chamberlain were toeing the rubber for the Cornhuskers

Burkamper and Waldron have been on display for the Nebraska baseball team in the first two games of this series against the Indiana Hoosiers. Game one saw Scott Schrieber do what he does best but lost in the offensive explosion was a dominant outing by Burkamper.

On Friday night, Waldron went to the mound knowing his team wasn’t going to have its biggest offensive weapon in the lineup. Schreiber was held out of the game because of a strained groin he apparently suffered in Thursday’s contest. Knowing he wasn’t going to have his biggest offensive gun, Waldron dominated and made the one run he got in the first and one run he got in the fifth stand up.

Waldron not only threw eight shutout innings of three-hit ball, but he recorded a career-high seven strikeouts in his seventh win of the season. Now that Indiana has gone up against, and been defeated by the Nebraska baseball team’s top two arms, it has to be deflating the pitcher taking the mound today, has the best ERA (1.65) and opponent batting average (.200) of the trio. Jake Meyers didn’t start the year in the rotation, but he’s become a mainstay thanks to stellar outing after stellar outing.

As the postseason is nearly upon us, pitching becomes more important. The Nebraska baseball team has three arms in the rotation that can shut any opponent down. That’s bad news for Husker opponents who thought their primary focus was going to be trying to shut down an offense that’s among the best in college baseball.
