The long and suffering season for the Nebraska Cornhuskers continued last Saturday. After notching their fifth loss of the season, there was no choice but to knock the Huskers back down a couple of notches in the Big Ten Rankings.
After losing to the Northwestern Wildcats by two points, the Huskers have lost five games by a combined 13 points. Currently, the Huskers are (3-5, 1-3), and are a loss away from being in the basement of the Big Ten West.
With that said, is a victory over Purdue a necessity for Mike Riley to keep the head coaching job? Most people would say no because thoughts of losing to Purdue isn’t on their radar. However, if the Huskers loss to a team with one win, it might be too much for the fan base to handle. So, we hope it doesn’t get to that point.
The top of the Big Ten rankings remained the same. The Ohio State Buckeyes had their best performance of the season. The Buckeyes scored the first 49 points in the 42 point victory over Rutgers. J.T. Barrett has taken over the reigns as starting quarterback. The Buckeyes also dedicated the offense to the running game.
The Michigan State Spartans are following the Buckeyes. Both teams will meet in late November, and the winner is likely to become the champion of the Big Ten East. Still, there’s a lot of football to be played during the conference season.
The Iowa Hawkeyes also remain in the top three of the Big Ten rankings. They have a chance to runaway with the Big Ten East. If they finish the season undefeated, the Hawkeyes might be in line for a College Football Playoff berth.
All three undefeated teams are represented in the College football Treat 16 Power Poll. There will have to be some monumental performances for the top of the Big Ten rankings to change. In fact, the Huskers can wreck the Big Ten race in both divisions. The have a pair of home games against Michigan State and Iowa to end the season.
Here are the Big Ten Rankings.
