Tommy Armstrong
1. Tommy Armstrong – QB: Until we acknowledge how bad Tommy Armstrong and the Nebraska Cornhuskers have been in the passing game, it will be hard for things to get better.
During the first four games, Armstrong torched defenses for at least 300 yards in three of the contests. However, his regression hasn’t done the Huskers any good. According to Omaha.com, the coaches want to get Armstrong some easier passes early in the game. However, that might not be the answer. Last week, Armstrong started the game 1/6 passing for three yards in the first quarter.
If they really want to help Armstrong get started fast, the Huskers need the running game going. They need the I-backs hitting holes. They also need Armstrong to be a threat in the running game. Once the Huskers make some good plays in the ground attack, they need to stick with it.
Armstrong was 21/59 yards for 234 yards and a touchdown in the last two games. He also threw one interception against Illinois. Still, the Huskers had the ball in both games with a chance to run out the clock. Due to multiple unfortunate events, the Huskers found a way to lose both games.
Facing Minnesota’s defense won’t be pretty. Therefore, Armstrong is going to have to get dirty this weekend. He might have to run the ball 20 times. If he’s able to will the Huskers to a victory, Nebraska might find a chance to make a bowl game. If they lose, the chances of the Nebraska Cornhuskers making the postseason are slim.
