The Nebraska Cornhuskers come into the 2015 season relatively healthy, compared to how things were shaping up in training camp. During the release of Monday’s depth chart, the only injured player expected to receive significant time is WR De’Mornay Pierson-El. Therefore, the Cornhuskers should be running full tilt during Saturday’s match up with the BYU Cougars.
On offense, quarterback Tommy Armstrong has been a steady hand for the Huskers throughout fall camp. As one of the most intriguing quarterbacks in the country, Armstrong has maintained his position as the No.1 guy, and should be chomping at the bit to show off his skills within Mike Riley’s offense. Armstrong also leads the way with 21 starts for Nebraska in his first two seasons of play. Ryker Fyfe won the backup job, while A.J. Bush earned the third QB spot for the Huskers.
There’s a great chance Armstrong will be throwing to a bevy of wide receivers this season. Despite the loss of Pierson-El early on, the Cornhuskers should showcase plenty of targets capable of making big plays. Led by Jordan Westerkamp, Nebraska has seven receivers ready to make an impact in the season opener. On one side, Nebraska will have Alonzo Moore, and Jamal Turner. When the Huskers form their three wide receiver sets, Brandon Reilly, Lane Hovey, or Stanley Morgan will find plenty of time on the field. Including senior Taariq Allen, Nebraska will showcase plenty of interchangeable parts this season.
Terrell Newby is the lead back in a load backfield. The Huskers are looking to showcase a running back by committee formula in 2015
Last season, the running back position was held down by Ameer Abdullah. This season could be all about balance. The Huskers have five viable candidates to get the majority of the snaps led by Terrell Newby. However, he’s accompanied by Imani Cross, Adam Taylor, Mikale Wilbon, and Devine Ozigbo. The running back by committee approach could be one of the more spectacular displays in the country.
The Cornhuskers have a veteran offensive line returning for the season, and they should be a strength for the offensive unit. Left tackle Alex Lewis has 13 starts under his belt, while Zach Sterup has 10. However, Sterup will be performing in a back up role behind Nick Gates at right tackle. Center Ryne Reeves and Dylan Utter have one start apiece. With the addition of Chongo Kondolo at right guard, the Cornhuskers have three seniors and a junior manning the front.
Cethan Carter is looking to make his mark on 2015 season. Nebraska Cornhuskers can use his big plays
One cause for concern has been the tight ends. Although they have four players on the depth chart, none of the players have taking the reigns as the lead guy. Cethan Carter hasn’t lived up to the hype, but pressure could be off of his shoulders this season.
Right now, the Huskers look pretty good on paper, but they will be dealing with an aggressive BYU defense. In roughly five days, college football will know how far the Nebraska offense has come.
