Husker Baseball: Tuesday night WIN against Creighton

facebooktwitterreddit

According to D1Baseball, Nebraska’s stock took a hit after the sweep by Iowa, a team on the rise in the polls. Huskers have a good RPI of 20 but are 2-11 vs. RPI Top 50 teams. We need some victories to put them in a better postseason place. HUSKERS sweep Creighton with game three winning 7-6!

Tuesday night at TD Ameritrade the Huskers took on Creighton. Big Red has beaten them twice this year (3/31 5-1 & 4/14 7-6) On the mound was Garett King who started both of the other midweek contests. His ERA before the game was 2.64. RHP for Creighton Jack Rogalla was 1.59 before the contest.  He went 2 innings and ended the night only giving up 3 hits but due to some wild pitches Creighton managed to score 3 runs. There was a limit on his pitch count for this game.

In relief first was Christensen who pitched to only 7 batters and kept the Jays from doing any more damage in the next two innings. In the 5th, he got into trouble after 2 outs on a hit by Reagan Fowler and then walking Murray. Husker Jeff Chestnut came in with those two on base and struck the next batter out to end the inning. He got into some more trouble putting two on in the 6th before he was pulled by Coach Erstad.

Colton Howell replaced Chestnut and walked the next two batters abd eventually got out of the inning, but not until after Creighton scored 2 more making it 5-3. Howell settled down in the 7th only giving up a double. And THEN….wait for it…Ben Miller came on to pitch in the 8th! Yes, DH Miller on the mound. That BEAST grounded out 2 and struck one out looking! Way to GO BIG BEN!

Josh Roeder came in for the 9th and served up a lead off triple and then another base hit to put the tying run on second. A bunt put men on the corners. He grounded out the next two keeping the Bluejay at 3rd. He got the save and ties the Nebraska record at 31 saves. NICE work JOSH!

Big hitters for Big Red were only Blake Headley with a double for the night. He also came in with a CLUTCH perfect bunt to load the bases in the 8th. Sophomore Ryan Boldt stayed hot (7 for 14 in Iowa) as he went 3 for 4. Jake Schleppenbach was also 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base.

Austin Darby’s 12-game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0 for 4.  Lubach took the night off after the concussion in Iowa and there were some costly miscues at the plate for catcher Fish. Placzek remained out of the lineup nursing an old shoulder injury.

More from Husker Corner

At the end of the day the Huskers managed to keep Creighton from crossing that last 90 feet to send it into extra innings. And yeah…the SWEEP of the series. Way to GO BIG RED!

Only 8 games left for Nebraska and I’m going to say it’s a must win for the rest of them if they want a shot at anything other than a 4 seed in the group of 64 for postseason. Winning the Big Ten will of course go a long way in that argument too but I’m not counting on it unless Darin Erstad get’s his team hot quickly. The next game is Friday at 3:00 from Evanston, Illinois. Time for Big Red to get serious and win out. GO BIG RED!!!
