Huskers fall to Boilermakers on Friday

On a blustery Friday afternoon, the Nebraska softball team fell to Purdue softball in a pitcher’s duel game 0 – 1. It was the second straight Big Ten road game loss for the Huskers this season.

Emily Lockman started for the Big Red and went the distance. Lockman allowed 1 run on 6 hits, striking out 5. She pitched marvelously for two innings but Purdue hitters began to spray hits through the next couple.

Purdue broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fifth inning. With a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt and a two-out walk, Purdue had runners at second and third. Ashley Burkhardt slapped a grounder up the middle for an RBI single.

Offensively, Nebraska loaded the bases twice but failed to score. In the 3rd inning, freshman Laura Barrow walked while Kiki Stokes and MJ Knighten added back-to-back singles to load the bases. However, it went for naught as junior Alicia Armstrong lined out to the shortstop followed by senior Steph Pasquale who lined out to the 2nd baseman.

In the 5th inning, the Huskers threatened once again. Laura Barrow reached on a walk before Stokes singled and Knighten walked. Armstrong lined out again to the shortstop who threw home for a force out. It was up to Husker catcher Steph Pasquale to bring home a Husker for a score but she struck out swinging.

It was a tough game for the Huskers to lose. Pitcher’s duels always are especially when one run wins the contest. For Nebraska, MJ Knighten extended her hitting streak to 19 games and Kiki Stokes went 3-for-3.
