Husker women’s basketball: “We’re going dancing!”

After a successful 2014-15 season, the Nebraska women’s basketball team was selected Monday night (March 16th) to the NCAA women’s basketball tournament. The Big Red, who finished the season 21-10 (10-8 Big Ten), is seeded #9 in the Greensboro Regional and will play #8 seeded Syracuse. They will travel to Columbia, SC where they will play in a 1st round game on Friday night, 6:30pm (CDT).

Since their return home, the Big Red have enjoyed some much needed rest after the rigorous season schedule. They have been practicing, though, to maintain continuity and improve on basketball skills.

On Tuesday, March 10th during the Connie Yori Radio Show, she talked about the 2014-15 basketball season and the upcoming NCAA tournament. She talked about the physically exhausting schedule Nebraska women's basketball endured this season. Since joining the B1G Ten conference, women's basketball has sometimes played three games in a seven day stretch with no days off. They play their conference tournament before Big 10 men's basketball finishes the regular season and moves into their conference tournament. Then women's basketball must sit and wait for at least 14 days for the NCAA tournament.

To some, it might seem a great fortune to have 2 weeks off between the end of the conference tournament and possible NCAA tourney action. Coach Yori said it actually presents a bit of an obstacle. Sure, the squad gets extended rest. Team practices are held in preparation for the tournament. However, without real game competition, you can lose rhythm and flow. We'll hope the Big Red team has it all together on Friday night.

For the 4 Husker seniors, (don't forget about our senior profiles on Emily Cady, Tear'a Laudermill, Brandi Jeffrey, and Hailie Sample)  it will be special. They are the first senior class in school history to play in four NCAA Tournaments! With that experience surrounded by a team of talented athletes, this is a memory in the making.

Nebraska and Syracuse have never met before. Syracuse (21-9) tied for fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season standings, but lost to No. 13 seed Wake Forest in the second round of the ACC tournament. If the Huskers are victorious over Syracuse, they would likely go on to play #1 seeded South Carolina.

The game will be televised on ESPN2 with radio coverage provided by the Husker Sports Network over Huskers.com and their radio affiliates across Nebraska. Be loud and proud Husker Nation. GO BIG RED!!
