Mother Nature cooperated with the Husker baseball team today providing sunny skies, a north wind and warm temperatures as BIG RED took on the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at Hawks Field today winning 3-6. Today’s fans showed up in appreciation to the tune of 6,062. Way to GO BIG RED!

Eagles RHP Mike Murray certainly didn’t perform quite as he was billed but lasted deep into the game despite going through the entire lineup of Huskers and tossing over 41 pitches in the first inning. He ended up over 120 pitches into the 6th.  Sterling Kerner came in relief with a runner on 2nd in the bottom of the 6th.

Their head coach, Dave Tollett likes to get on top early and be ahead in the game as a strategy but the Eagles didn’t tie it up until the 5th inning, at 3-3. Eagle hitters Jake Noll (Preseason All-Conference list) ended the day for the Eagles 1 for 4 with a single in the 2nd. Colton Bottomley had a double in 3 at bats and Nick Rivera had 2 singles with an RBI for 4 at bats.

On the bump for the Huskers was senior RHP Chase Sinclair. He needed to keep the ball down and pound the zone. He started off the game 3 up, 3 down due to ground outs. He gave up a couple of doubles in the second scoring only 1 and didn’t look like himself on the mound.

Sinclair gathered himself and skated through the 6th inning 3 up, 3 down quickly and was still under 70 pitches miraculously. He finished up his day with 7 IP. In for relief was Howell with shut down filthy 3 Ks in the 8th, and Roeder in for the 9th with 2 Ks and a fly out to right to end the game.

DIRTY DOUBLES: Schleppenbach started off with a double after forcing the pitcher to throw 10 pitches across the plate in his at bat. Then ANOTHER double in the 6th. Headley with a 2 RBI in the bottom of the 6th to break the 3-3 tie. Miller had an RBI double in the bottom of 6.

For the Huskers, Blake Headley who has been on a tear of TRIPLES having scored 2 on both Tuesday and Wednesday, started off his day with a Sac Fly making him the team -leading 17th RBI. Also stepping up for the Huskers was Boldt with 3 singles and Darby with 2 singles on the day.

Pulled from the starting lineup today was Steven Reveles at shortstop for Wes Edrington. Reveles is a senior but has been struggling at the plate and is holding onto a .212 average. At the start of the game sophomore Edrington had only appeared in 1 other game and was 0-4 previously. He finished the day 0 for 3 with a walk.
