Huskers win against the Warriors in Houston

On a chilly (55 degrees) day in Houston at Minute Maid park, the Huskers were patient and waited until the 5th inning to score their first 2 runs of the day and added in a couple more in the bottom of the 8th. A 2RBI single by Schreiber scored Reveles and Schleppenbach who got past the catcher at home.  Boldt and Placzek scored in the 8th on RBI hit by Lubach and on an RBI fielder’s choice by Darby.

A late in the game rally by Hawaii brought 3 runs in to make it a nail biter but the Huskers prevailed and will take on LSU early tomorrow.

Husker pitcher Kyle Kubat retired the batters for the Warriors in order 3 up, 3 down in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. He ended the day with 100 pitches and went through 6 and 1/3. He gave up 5 hits, no runs, 3 walks and 5 Ks. Chestnut came in and worked the batter into a double play to end the drama in the top of the 7th for the Huskers as there were 2 on for Hawaii.

Closer Josh Roeder came in on the 9th and walked the first batter and then allowed a single. Big Red Roeder struck out the next guy in 3 pitches and another hit loaded the bases for the Warriors for the third time on the day. Roeder finished up by allowing a 3 run double by Kitaoka (his first hit on the day). Colton Howell then came on with 1 on and 2 outs, the score 3-4 Huskers leading.

Howell intentionally walked the 1st batter and they struck Richartz out with his filthy finish of pitches striking him out swinging.

Huskers did produce some quality hits on the day. Darby with a double to start the 3rd, Schleppenbach, Boldt, Reveles, Alvarado, Headley, Miller Lubach all had hits. Lubach with an RBI in the 8th scored Boldt, followed by a fielder’s choice on Darby and a stolen base.

Coach Erstad was glad to have this one under his belt but when asked what he would like to see translate into tomorrow’s game he said, “overall I want to see more urgency early in the game, be more consistent at the plate and get more of a grind 1 through 9.”

Best quote in his post game comments: “When the baseball Gods beat you down and test you, you just have to get through it.”

Huskers take on LSU tomorrow at 11 am. Hopefully the loss of the hour overnight doesn’t bother them too much. They will have to be on top of their game to face the Tigers who played and impressive game Friday night to put down the Houston Cougars.
