Husker Walk-Ons for 2015 Recruiting Class

Husker Football Head Coach Mike Riley said in his press conference on Wednesday that there wasn’t much chance at Oregon State to have a meaningful spring game scrimmage because they might only have 75 players. Here in Nebraska, with the strong Walk-On program there are 120 guys out there right now in conditioning. Well, that’s the truth right there. Dr. Tom Osborne has used words like “Loyalty, Motivation, Willingness to Sacrifice” to describe Husker walk-ons.

The walk-on program at Nebraska has left us with some amazing memories. They may not have had many “stars” next to their names to start but it was their dedication and their heart that made them stars on the field. Some of the walk on greats are punter Kyle Larson (’03), kicker Alex Henery (’10), DE Jared Tomich (’96), LB Scott Shanle (’02), Stewart Bradley (’06), Jeff & Joel Makovicka (’98). 30 Husker walk-ons have gone on to play in the NFL.

On signing day there were 8 more that committed to play for the Huskers. Right now I admit we don’t know much about them other than they have a great loyalty to the Big Red program. For me, that’s plenty. On the defensive side: Linebacker Jared Brugmann is 6’2″, 225 lbs. kid from Gretna, Nebraska. He will be joined by LB Brody Cleveland who is also 6’2″ and 220 lbs. He comes to Lincoln all the way from Ogallala. Good things come in 3s and the third LB is Jacob Weinmaster from Loveland, CO who stands 6′ 1″ and weighs 205 lbs.

More from Husker Corner

Listed as athletes are Conor Young at 6′ 3″ and 190 from Cozad and Wyatt Mazour at 5’8″, 190 lbs. from Albion Boone Central. He played QB but will be a Running Back prospect for the Huskers. Also listed at RB is Noah Johnson from Sutton, NE. He’s listed at 6’0″ and 200 lbs. Austin Hemphill is also from Gretna and played Fullback. He weighs in at 225 and stands at 6’0″. QB Reid Karel from Seward, NE is 6’3″ and 190 lbs. and a righty. Filling out the rest of the walk-0ns class for now are OL Fyn Anderson from Lincoln Southeast. He weighs in at 280 on a 6’2″ frame.

Coach Riley has already expressed the interest in having a coach specifically for recruiting walk-ons. I like that idea. I’m looking forward to what develops and GO BIG RED!!!
