No. 1 Nebraska women’s bowling team returned to Lincoln Sunday afternoon flying high. After placing 3rd two weeks ago at the Mid-Winter classic in Jonesboro, AR, the Huskers persevered to WIN the tournament at the Prairie View A&M Invitational in Arlington, Texas.
The tournament was held at the Olympic training center in Dallas. The three-day event began on Friday with 5 matches of five Baker* games and ended on Sunday with Baker pool play, best 4 out of 7. Participating in a very competitive field of 12, this is the third year in a row that Nebraska has won the PVAM Invitational.
* In typical league format, each team member bowls 10 frames in a game and the team score is the sum of each individual game. In a Baker format game, the entire team will combine to bowl one 10 frame game.
Nebraska defeated Fairleigh Dickinson 4-3 to earn the victory. Nebraska Head Coach Bill Straub said the Huskers were lucky to pull off the victory after trailing Fairleigh Dickinson at the end of Saturday action. In the tournament format, all standings from Friday and Saturday have no bearing on Sunday’s Baker tournament play.

NU head coach Bill Straub commented that the Huskers did not have their best ‘shot-making’ weekend, but they did hit the shots when they really mattered the most. “We didn’t have a very good event, we had some real good portions of the event, but our shot-making wasn’t good. We were fortunate to have won.”
NU started off Baker format tournament play Sunday against Arkansas State with the Huskers defeating ASU 4-0. The Huskers had to bowl the full 7 games to defeat Fairleigh Dickinson 4-3. Key performers for the Huskers were sophomore Gazmine Mason and senior Andrea Ruiz. Mason finished 12th in the individual standings, compiling a weekend average of 218.50, with a total pinfall of 1,311. Ruiz finished 16th individually, compiling an average of 215.60 over the weekend.
