Around the Corn: Husker tidbits you might have missed

facebooktwitterreddit

Current Wide Receiver Jamal Turner was granted his medical redshirt for last year. As you recall, he tore up his Achilles against McNeese State early on in the season. It will be great to have his experience back after losing Kenny Bell to the NFL (I’m just planning ahead.)

Remember the giggle we all had about Jack Gangwish getting bit by the raccoon and his subsequent demise. Apparently PETA made enough of an impact that he will serve a half game suspension but, according to interim Coach Cotton, will play in the bowl game. (great news he gets to play!)

Dedrick Young. Get used to hearing that name. He’s another one of the recruits (no. 2 officially) under new Husker Head Coach Mike Riley.  Young was a star RB and LB at his high school in Peoria, AZ. The buzz is extremely positive around this kid and part of the draw for Young was our strong academic record. No, seriously! He rushed for over 4,400 yards, logged the second most tackles in school history,  and also ran track for Centennial High School. His coaches call him “humble” and confident. Young will not need to put on much weight but comes in at 6′ 1″ and 215 lbs.

In case Dedrick needs to put some pounds on, Football Scoop is saying that Mark Philipp (yeah that’s going to get spelled wrong for a while) is going to be the new Husker Strength Coach. Current Coach Dobson is reportedly headed for Vandy. Not much out there on the new guy but that’s typical for these guys. He did train under Ivan Lewis who was the 2014 FBS Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year. He’s currently on the USC staff so I’m sure there will be plenty of photo ops during the bowl game to get acquainted with him. Welcome to the Husker family, Coach Philipp!

Current defensive backs coach, Charlton Warren, is going to stay on the Husker staff. YEAH! We just need to hear about Ron Brown now…

Former Husker and QB coach Joe Ganz tweeted his farewell recently as well. Go ahead and remind him that we all appreciate what he did for the HUSKER program. It’s the classy thing to do.

We will keep you updated as more news pops up. Stay tuned to Husker Corner for bowl game TV guide schedules and tips. GO BIG RED!
