Here’s what we THINK we know… Cornhuskers Football Coach Riley has been gathering his coaches almost alphabetically. The A is for effort in doing this quickly (yeah I know, it’s lame but the B’s make up for it). Here’s the B‘s:
Trent Bray – Linebacker coach. This guy played for Oregon State and started 34 of 49 of his games there. He signed as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins and the Houston Texans. He earned a bachelor’s in Sociology from Oregon State in 2005. Noteable: He started his coaching career with the UFL California Redwoods. (same league as the Omaha Nighthawks)
And according to Lindsay Schnell at Sports Illustrated, here’s who’s also been invited to Husker Country:
Mark Banker – Defensive coordinator. He brings 14 seasons of experience with the Beavers to Nebraska. In addition to that he had time with the Chargers like Cavanaugh and also logged hours at Stanford and USC. Banker is 59 years old and has a bachelor’s degree in Phys Ed from Springfield College in Massachusetts. He is married to Debbie and has three children: Chris, Jayme and Kelsey. Noteable: He was the DC for the San Diego Charger in 2001 after 2 years as CB coach.
Bruce Read – Special Teams. Read, a Bay Area, Oregon native has been coaching special teams for the past 11 seasons at Oregon State. He too has NFL experience having worked for Dallas, San Diego and NY Giants. He’s 52 and a graduate of Portland State with a bachelor’s in Social Science. His wife Christina and he have two sons, Justin and Joshua. Noteable: Read’s father was a coach at University of Montana and that’s where Bruce had his first job as a coach.

As for the C‘s:
Mike Cavanaugh – Offensive Line coach. He has spent 10 seasons at Oregon state and coached for the San Diego Chargers when Riley was there. “Coach Cav” comes to us from Connecticut (see how I did that, makes him easier to remember that way) and graduated from Southern Connecticut State after earning a bachelor’s degree in Phys Ed in 1986. He’s 52 and married to Laurie and has two sons, Shane and Blair. Noteable: his brother worked as OC with the NY Giants from 2008 – 2012.
Chancellor Harvey Perlman got into the action last week taking to Twitter. I never thought I would live to see the day he used the term YOLO.
I’m sure negotiations are ongoing with others but I would really like to know who is being retained from our current Huskers coaching staff. Maybe he doesn’t want to let anyone know before the bowl game. But if I were Cotton I would already know the writing is on the wall. Regardless GO BIG RED!
