Nebraska Basketball: View from the Cheap Seats
I hate to take too much away from an exhibition game, but I’ll admit, for the most part I was frustrated with Nebraska basketball’s November 6 exhibition. I’m sure head coach Tim Miles was even more worked up.
Adidas’ tag-line for the season is ‘Heart over Hype’, but from the way the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs fired away early and often it seemed they took the same mantra to heart.
Have the Huskers been reading the preseason press clippings too much? It’s hard to tell, but the bottom line is they claimed a 83-61 victory, yet another inside of the Vault.
Here’s what I saw from my view in the cheap seats:
Andrew Bienka-Husker Corner
– Have yourself a day, Shavon Shields. While the rest of the team seemed to sleepwalk through the game, Mr. Shields did not.
The Kansas City native came to play with a stat line of 29 points, nine rebounds and an assist.
He had a bit of a scare late in the game when he came down hard after being fouled on a layup. He would return to the bench area, but not the game.
– Walter Pitchford had a quiet evening not scoring any points, but he was able to grab seven defensive rebounds. He left the game with an injury and did not return.
If there was a guy the Nebraska basketball team couldn’t afford to lose behind Terran Petteway, it’s likely Pitchford. The depth isn’t there as Jake Hammond doesn’t appear to be ready yet and Moses Abraham still needs to work on his in-game speed and movement.
– I can tell you one thing for sure: If Tai Webster can go 4-for-5 from the field and 3-for-4 from downtown to score 16 points per game this season, Miles will be a very happy man and the team will win a lot of games.

The young man clearly learned a lot from his experience overseas during the summer months with the New Zealand national team and it looks to already be paying dividends.
The Big Ten needs to watch out for Webster. As his confidence grows, he’s only going to get better.
– Terran Petteway is a shooter, a scorer and a playmaker. He’s going to find a way to work through the struggles tonight (3-of-16 from the field) and find a way to get the job done. Of this I have no doubt.
When he has an off night, it’s nice to see guys like Shields and Webster step up and take the pressure off TP5.
