Nebraska Basketball: Greg McDermott Stokes Rivalry Flames

facebooktwitterreddit

Growing up as a Nebraska basketball fan in Omaha, I was exposed to plenty of Creighton fans. I was also exposed to plenty of Jayskers and my opinion of them has…well soured as time’s gone on, especially now that Nebraska’s on the upswing.

Fan bases of convenience never thrilled me. However, what I do love and encourage is pride in one’s school. If you’re a Creighton Bluejay fan, wear that tag proudly and the same goes for Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Of course, growing up as a Nebraska football fan, the rivalry I was most familiar with was Oklahoma. It remains a series of respect, a rarity in college athletics.

Last year, Nebrasketball suffered a nasty 82-67 defeat at the hands of the Bluejays, highlighted by Doug McDermott’s 33 points and eight rebounds. With coach Greg McDermott’s son off to the Windy City, the balance of power is shifting in the Cornhusker State.

Creighton fans are taking trolling to a new level in the meantime. This is probably a good idea considering the Bluejays visit The Vault on Sun, Dec. 7.

The cries of “scoreboard” may fade away in less than a month.

About that trolling. Nebraska looked sloppy against a Southwest Minnesota State team that showed up for an exhibition, but the Big Red eventually won running away. That doesn’t mean the Mustangs didn’t have support.

Oh, that is fun. Miles actually took pictures with the ash gray-clad fans in the stands because he’s just…how can a human being be this nice?

For those of you living under a rock, Husker men’s basketball head coach Tim Miles recently applied to be the Sports Director of our Student Group for Games.

Sadly, the Iron N (Nebraska’s official committee for student section activities) had to say, “thanks, but no thanks.”

Just Miles being Miles, right?

Rivalries can begin by simple snubs, say Maryland’s football representatives’ refusal to shake hands with Penn State’s at midfield prior to last week’s game…which the Terrapins would go on to win.

Then there’s the ones that are waiting for that perfect moment, that special spark.

I think we’ve found that moment.

Interesting. Apparently Creighton only needs to offer a Groupon deal to do that. Jake Bockoven, co-host of Drop the Mike with Mike Welch on Lincoln’s 93.7 The Ticket dropped a bomb during the show’s Nov. 7, 2014 airing:

“Just wait until after this year and coach Miles can say, ‘I don’t need my son to make the tournament.'”

Snap, America. Snap.

Bring the heat, bring the trash, bring it all into The Vault. Once that door shuts on December 7, I do not envy the Bluejays and that’s with a month to go until the actual meeting. In the meantime, let the selfies continue.
