Meet your Omaha Mammoths: Cornerback Qua Cox
By Kelli Anne
Qua Cox, is a feisty 5’ 11” Cornerback who hails from Jackson State, Mississippi. He was drafted as a free agent by the Indianapolis Colts in May of 2014 following his college career. He was later waived on the deadline for roster in late August of this year. An NFL Scout described him as “Cox is hell on wheels. His technique makes him look faster in person.” Qua describes himself as “QUICKER rather than fast. When I’m in the zone nobody can beat me.”

This unflappable Omaha Mammoths defensive player “stays hungry” and said a big key to his game is to “disrupt the timing” of the wide receivers. One of the ways he stays focused on learning what gets to the next teams’ receivers in film study which is part of his weekly routine. He said some guys don’t like the jam off the line, and others don’t like him running stride for stride with them.
When asked about a critical interception he made in the Omaha Mammoths second home game victory against the Florid Blacktips Cox said, “I just went and got it. After I saw the ball in the air, I left my man because he wasn’t a threat anymore and I just attacked the ball.” The interception on their own 13 yard line gave the Mammoths back the ball with 6:19 left in the game. QB Jordan Jefferson then engineered a touchdown drive to put the woolly beasts back on top 20-13.
Cox said he was impressed with the Omaha crowds so far given the short amount of time there was to get the word out about the team and the schedule. “Every town is culturally different. I’m from the south and it’s different, but everyone here is nice.” After speaking with him it’s clear he still has a fiercely competitive drive.
Cox continues to work hard and hopes that at the end of the day the NFL powers that be will bring him back up into the next level. Another Omaha Mammoths player, wide receiver Eric Thomas, was just picked up by the Indianapolis Colts. “It’s great to see players getting called up. I hope I’m next,” commented Cox. Come watch Qua Cox and the rest of the stingy Mammoths Defense Wednesday night at TD Ameritrade. The Thundering Herd rolls into action at 7:00 pm. or watch it on ESPN3 as Harry Cicma calls the game.
