Miami teams from the early ’80s on have never lacked two things: Talent and attitude. The 1994 version were absolutely no different.

Lead by defensive standouts Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp, the unit was ferocious and were primed to stop Tommie Frazier (returning from injury) and the Husker football offense.

Miami’s offense was lead by quarterback Frank Costa, who threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Trent Jones to push the ‘Canes lead to 10-0.

The Huskers responded later on in the second quarter with a Brook Berringer to Mark Gilman touchdown pass. The second half saw Miami push their lead to 17-7 on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Costa to Jonathan Harris.

Then the tide turned. Locker room videos have shown Tom Osborne warning his team against responding to any taunting or cheap play by Miami players.

Had you asked any Nebraska football fan which player they’d least expect to actually heed coach Osborne’s warning they likely would have responded with Christian Peter’s name.

Well, the hotheaded defensive tackle did just that. He did not respond to a personal foul against Miami which set up a Nebraska safety.

The fourth quarter featured two fullback trap plays to Cory Schlesinger to complete a Husker comeback and seal Tom Osborne’s first national championship.
