Defensive Backs C+

Safeties Josh Kalu and Nathan Gerry both had solid games, with the latter collecting 13 tackles, two tackles for loss, a pass breakup and one quarterback hurry.

Gerry showed speed and athleticism throughout the game and deserves major credit. The play that sticks out in my mind is his blitz during the fourth quarter while a tight end had slipped into the flat deep in Husker territory.

Gerry jumped in the air and knocked the ball down while the Cowboy stood wide open in the end zone.

Kalu saw his most extensive game action of his young career, and showed flashes of major talent on special teams making a few open field tackles helping to pin the Cowboys deep.

Of the few good things to take away from this game, Kalu and Gerry’s effort is near the top of the list.

Rather comically, the defense collected its first turnover of the season when Corey Cooper was gifted an interception on the game’s final play during a desperation heave down field.
