Coming off of a victory last week, the Nebraska football team knew that their second game of the season would be more challenging. The McNeese State Cowboys sure gave the Cornhuskers a scare, especially when they made it a 3 point game in the fourth quarter.

The Huskers were down early in the game, as the Cowboys scored on their first possession of the game after holding Nebraska on theirs. Nebraska ran right down the field and scored on their next possession to tie the game up at 7.

Nebraska took the lead on their very next possession on a 2 yard touchdown from Ameer Abdullah. The lead lasted until the beginning of the second quarter when Tommy Armstrong Jr. threw a pick in the red zone that went all the way back for a touchdown. Tie game at 14.

Armstrong made up for it on the next possession by running in for a score to take a 7 point lead going into half time.

Coming into the second half of the game, the Huskers punted on their first two possessions and then had to settle for a Drew Brown field goal on their third possession. The lack of getting the ball in the end zone allowed McNeese State to score their third touchdown of the game and make it a 3 point game in the 4th quarter.

The Cornhuskers continued failing to make plays in the fourth quarter and the game became a nail biter. Cowboys quarterback Daniel Sams was able to complete a 27 yard pass to Zach Hetrick that put McNeese State at midfield. Immediately after that, Kelvin Bennett had a 32 yard reception that took the Cowboys down into Nebraska territory. Eek.

Not a good game for Nebraska. The defense had a terrible showing giving up 176 rushing yards and 154 passing yards. Tommy Armstrong Jr. had a horrible interception returned for a touchdown that could have certainly made the game not as close.

Nebraska also didn’t help their case with a face mask penalty that put the Cowboys on the Husker 4-yard line and allowed them to kick the tying field goal with 5 minutes remaining in the game.

Luckily Ameer Abdullah is on this team. He grabbed a pass from Armstrong and should have been tackled 600 times before running 58 yards into the endzone. We love you Ameer.

Then on the Cowboys’ last chance to make something happen, Corey Cooper picked off Tyler Bolfert to give the Huskers the win. I really don’t think the Huskers deserved that win, but thank goodness they came through.
