3. 1994

The Husker football team labeled the 1994 season as “Unfinished Business” after being so close, but so far from a national title in 1993.

These Nebraska Cornhuskers were stacked with experienced talent going into the season, but that would quickly change before conference play.

After losing safety Mike Minter for the season in the second game, Nebraska was dealt a serious blow after learning dynamic Tommie Frazier had blood clots in his knee and would have to miss significant time.

Nebraska was fortunate to have quarterback Brook Berringer waiting in the wings and he picked right up where Tommie left off.

With the help of “The Pipeline”, the Blackshirts, and running back Lawrence Phillips, Berringer led Nebraska to another undefeated regular season.

One more obstacle had to be overcome, a win in the Orange Bowl versus the hometown team No. 3 Miami (FL).

This had become a trend for Tom Osborne, as he failed to win the national championship against Florida teams in the same locale in 1983 and 1993.

Frazier returned for the postseason, but the Floridian fight looked to be shifting Miami’s way the ‘Canes they led 17-7 late in the third quarter.

Osborne proved to be a prophet, as he told his team that Miami would be worn down by the end of the game during his halftime address.

Nebraska scored the game’s final 17 points to win the game.

After 22 years, Tom Osborne was doused with a Gatorade bath of National Championship proportions.
