Husker Football: Top 10 Teams of All-Time
4. 1997
Nebraska had no problem getting up for it’s prominent games in 1997. The Huskers dominated the four ranked teams they faced by an average of 26.8 points per game.
What looked to be an old-fashioned trap game against old conference rival Missouri nearly kept the Huskers from winning national title No. 3 in five years.
The “Flea Kicker” (a last second touchdown catch by freshman wide receiver Matt Davison off of wide receiver Shevin Wiggins foot) saved Nebraska’s season as it pushed the game versus the Tigers into overtime.
In the extra stanza, Grant Wistrom and the Blackshirt defense shut down the Tigers, helping the Huskers win 45-38.
That close call may have cost the Huskers an undisputed national championship, but Nebraska did claim a share of the title after dominating Peyton Manning and No. 3 Tennessee 42-17 in Tom Osborne’s final game as head coach.
