6. 1970

By the time bowl season rolled around, Nebraska had plenty of reasons to be proud of it’s football team.

The Huskers had a chance to go undefeated for the first time since 1915, if they could top No. 5 LSU in the Orange bowl.

An early September 21-21 tie with USC likely halted any shot of a national title for the then-No. 3 Big Red, but there was an outside chance.

Destiny was on Nebraska’s side that New Year’s Day as No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Ohio State lost before Nebraska’s bowl game kicked off.

The Huskers had a chance!

Nebraska led most of the game, but would trail LSU in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Jerry Tagge scored the game’s go-ahead points on a one-yard dive into the end zone to put Nebraska up 17-12.

The Blackshirt defense held the LSU offensive attack in the final minutes to make history.

After 81 years of football, Nebraska was the National Champion!

Not So Fun Fact: Texas claims 1970 as one of it’s National Championship seasons. Up until 1973, the UPI Coaches poll’s final rankings came out before the bowl games.

This gave the Longhorns a share of the title, despite their 24-11 loss to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl.
