Led by Butkus award winning linebacker Trev Alberts and sophomore sensation Tommie Frazier, Nebraska went undefeated during the regular season.
The Huskers would also add a Big Eight championship trophy to the case for the third straight year.
After missing out on a few opportunities in the early ’80s, Tom Osborne was finally in position once again to claim his first national title.
Standing in the Cornhuskers’ way was Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Charlie Ward and the Florida State Seminoles.
Of course, this game would be played in the Sunshine State at the Orange Bowl.
Frazier (the game’s eventual Co-MVP) and Alberts (who tallied three sacks) out-shined everyone on the Seminoles’ roster that day.
The game featured a hectic ending that put Nebraska in position to break the 22-year national championship drought with a 45-yard field goal.
That kick went wide left and Florida State claimed the 1993 title.
Despite the loss, Nebraska’s historic momentum had begun. The Huskers wouldn’t lose again for two and a half years.
