Most seasons in college football leave fans wondering how their team would do against the rest of the season’s elite.

1971 was not such a year.

Nebraska went undefeated to win their second-straight national championship, defeating the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 teams as ranked in the final polls.

No one even came close to beating Nebraska besides the Huskers’ longtime rival Oklahoma.

“The Game of the Century” was close throughout. The highlight play was, of course, a dynamic punt return for a touchdown by future Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers.

However, Nebraska didn’t clinch the win until the final minutes as Jeff Kinney scored his fourth touchdown of the day, putting the Cornhuskers up 35-31.

Nebraska wrapped up the national title by dominating Bear Bryant and the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide 38-6 in the Orange Bowl.
