Husker Football: Bo Pelini Calls Marijuana Use “Out Of Control”
There are a few things Husker football head coach Bo Pelini isn’t a fan of. National Signing Day isn’t exactly his favorite aspect of recruiting. Parents interfering in the process (of recruiting) isn’t either.
During the weekly Big Red Breakfast on Friday, he vented about something else he takes issue with: Marijuana.
"Pelini called it not only an issue in high schools, middle schools and even grade schools, but society in general, saying: “It is out of control”Let’s face it, it’s not OK,” Pelini said. “I think everybody that’s our age, my age, hopefully understands that it’s not OK. It’s not good. It’s not good for you. And these kids do it on a daily basis and a yearly basis … and it’s a real problem out there.” – Omaha World-Herald"
There’s nothing wrong with Pelini putting his foot down about his feelings regarding marijuana use, and clearly he holds his own players to a high standard when it comes to weed.
"“Fortunately for us it is not (an issue) in our program. But I can tell you around college football and college athletics … serious in college. I guarantee you walk into dorms nowadays and it is a horrible problem.”"
When asked to expound on the matter, the OWH reported his take as:
"“I think it’s something in society we need to get fixed, but unfortunately they get bad information.”"
Pelini’s stance towards marijuana is an interesting one, especially in light of legalization across the country and the question of how much of an affect it truly has on the game.
His feelings towards weed also bring up another point. Where do you draw the line when it comes to mind-altering substances?
Obviously minors drinking alcohol is unacceptable, but what about those Huskers who are of age?
A CNN article points out that according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Approximately 17.6 million people, or one in every 12 adults suffer from alcohol abuse or dependence.
Compare that to the National Institute of Drug Abuse’s findings that “9 percent of people who use marijuana will become addicted to it.”

Here’s a stat that’s rather eye-opening.
According to the article, “One study found it was safe for animals to consume about 30 percent of their body weight in cannabis without overdosing; that’s the equivalent of a 160-pound person eating 48 pounds of weed at one time.”
In other words, you have to make a major conscious effort when it comes to severely destroying your body using marijuana as compared to a night or two of binge drinking.
What’s Pelini’s motivation behind his feelings towards the wacky tobacky? Hard to say.
One thing’s for certain: When he makes his mind up about something, it’s most often set in stone.
