Defensive Back

Josh Mitchell may have been the best cover corner the Blackshirts had in 2013.

That’s saying something considering Nebraska graduated a second round NFL draft pick in Stanley Jean-Baptiste and a record-setting nickelback in Ciante Evans.

The senior captain looked like he’s improved even more for the upcoming season. It might not be long until Mitchell gets the “lockdown corner” label.

Nebraska lost a significant talent when sophomore safety LeRoy Alexander was suspended for the season.

Not many teams could bounce back from a hit like that, but the depth of this defense is impressive.

The Huskers will plug Nathan Gerry into that position to team with Corey Cooper giving the Big Red one of the most damaging safety duos in the Big Ten.

Questions remain for Nebraska in regards to the No. 2 cornerback and who will take over for Alexander.

Byerson Cockrell will likely get the start at nickelback as he improved at the position throughout camp.

Daniel Davie and Jonathan Rose will continue their battle for that No. 2 spot opposite Mitchell as the season begins.

The Huskers could use as many as three true freshman as well showing that the future looks extremely bright for this secondary.
