Big Ten Football: Preseason Stock Report Rankings
8. Minnesota
Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports
Last year: 8-5 (4-4)
This Week: vs. Eastern Illinois (Aug 28 – 6:00 P.M. on BTN)
My Prediction: Minnesota 28-13
The Golden Gophers somehow found a way to be the surprise of the conference in 2013, despite being incredibly one dimensional on offense.
They ranked last in passing, passing yards per game and passing touchdowns.
To make matters worse, “passing” quarterback Phillip Nelson is no longer on the team.
Mitch Liedner will take over as the permanent starter. Teaming with running back David Cobb who contributed 1,202 yards in 2013, Liedner and the Gopher offense will once again rely heavily on the run.
Minnesota’s defense was very formidable last season, but was weak against good passing teams. Junior defensive end Theiron Cockran (7.5 sacks in 2013) will need some help putting pressure on the quarterback.
The Gophers schedule sets up for another potential bowl game.
However, Minnesota might have to earn eligibility before a daunting November gauntlet that includes games against Iowa and Ohio State along with trips to Nebraska and Wisconsin.
