THE BOTTOM FEEDERS

14.Purdue

Nowhere to go but up for the Boilermakers after winning just one game for head coach Darrell Hazell in his inaugural season.

Last year: 1-11 (0-8)

This Week: vs. Western Michigan (Aug 30 – 11 A.M. on ESPNU)

My Prediction: Purdue 30-14

13. Rutgers

The Big Ten is a major step up from the AAC. Rutgers’ new running buddies will test the Scarlet Knights’ durability in year one, especially up front.

    My Prediction:Washington State 38-24

    12. Illinois

Oklahoma State transfer Wes Lunt takes over at quarterback but unless the Illini can turn around their defense, they may be have trouble getting out of the bottom feeder category.

    Last year: 4-8 (1-7)

This Week: Youngstown State (Aug 30th – 11 A.M.| BTN)

    My Prediction: Illinois 52-21

    11. Northwestern

Pat Fitzgerald took his program to the next level in 2012, but since then things have fallen apart. Off-season distractions and the transfer of stud running back Venric Mark have the Wildcats sliding to the back of the pack.

    Last year: 5-7 (1-7)

    This Week: vs. Cal (Aug 30 – 2:30 P.M. on ABC/ESPN2)

    My Prediction: Northwestern 34-24

    10. Maryland

    Last year: 7-6(3-5)

This Week: vs. James Madison (Aug 30 – 2:30 pm on BTN)

    My Prediction: Maryland 38-16

There’s plenty of good news for the Terrapins as they begin their first Big Ten football season.

Maryland returns nine starters on both sides of the ball from a bowl eligible team in 2013.

The bad news is said team benefited from a weak schedule last season (no such luck this year), and a conference change is never easy.

Head Coach Randy Edsall seemed confident he wouldn’t have to change much in regards to his team or recruiting.

Sounds like a guy who is in for a surprise. Nebraska is just now finishing adjusting to the new conference. The Huskers joined in 2011.

Maryland has elite playmakers on both sides of the ball. Defensive End Andre Monroe racked up 9.5 sacks last year. Wide Reciever Stefon Diggs is electrifying, but returning from injury. The overall roster is “middle of the pack” at best.

Edsall will need to get the most out of his talent, as he is a borderline hot seat coach.

Winning four conference games is a realistic goal for the Terrapins.
