Husker Football’s Alternate Uniforms: The Date Debate

facebooktwitterreddit

Not long ago, I commented on the silence regarding an alternate uniform for Husker football in 2014. A few fans asked if Nebraska would even wear them, but that’s not even a question anymore. As I said yesterday during my guest co-hosting spot on Drop The Mike, there’s money to be made.

Nebraska fans waited and waited until finally…

"“We are doing an alternate uniform. I don’t know if Adidas would enjoy you calling it a funky uniform,” Pelini said with a laugh. – Lincoln Journal Star, Jul 29, 2014"

Ah ha! Gotcha!

The news was well-receved by Kenny Bell (as I’m sure it will be by all Husker football players):

"“That’s news to me,” he said, offering the reporter a fist bump to celebrate."

Now that we know Nebraska will yet again wear an alternate uniform, there’s the two other questions I attempted to tackle: what will they look like and when will they be worn? While all I can do right now is guess or offer a mock up idea in terms of design, the date can be narrowed down.

Pelini wasn’t sure about when these fancy new duds would be paraded around.

"“Don’t hold me to it, but I think it’s the Illinois game,” Pelini said. “I think it’s the Big Ten opener. I think that announcement is coming up pretty quick.”"

That game does makes sense. Not only is it the Big Red’s conference opener, it’s also Homecoming and a game Nebraska has no business losing. However, if I’m picking a team to toss those beauties out against, it’s the Miami Hurricanes. The tradition, the bad blood, the prime time national spotlight…it’s just so perfect.

However, if the Big Red brass pulls the trigger on that idea, they run the risk of the Huskers dropping two games in a row featuring a unique Adidas concept. While Nebraska fans will buy anything with an “N” on it, that’s still not good for business.

On the other hand, the Illinois game is genius from a strategic standpoint. While not on ABC or ESPN, it is featured on BTN and is also a night game. It actually kicks off at 8:00 p.m, a full hour later than Nebraska’s contest with the ‘Canes.

Again, we go back to the likelihood of the Huskers winning this game, but let’s look at this from another angle. If Nebraska’s non-conference schedule doesn’t treat them well, or let’s say the Huskers lose to Miami, they have a bounce back game wearing sick threads under the lights.

More from Nebraska Football

From the opposite side of the spectrum, if Nebraska’s at 4-0 heading into the Illinois clash, can you imagine the energy in Memorial Stadium?

A Husker team likely to be 5-0 after all’s said and done thundering onto the field in alternates that get players, recruits and at least some fans pumped up.

That’s a lasting image.

There’s no wrong answer here, but I stand by the preference of the Miami game. The Adidas vs. Adidas debate is thrown out the window as both teams sport The Swoosh.

As to when we all find out the details of Nebraska’s alternate uni plans…well, coach Pelini himself said he feels that announcement’s coming up soon.

I don’t doubt him and look forward to it.
