The Nebraska Cornhuskers open the doors to Memorial Stadium to the public at 2pm for Fan Day. Every coach and player will be available for autographs and handshakes for the thousands that are expected to attend. While fans are excited to see their favorite Huskers up close and personal, Fan Day signifies something much bigger.

Football season has arrived. While coaches and players will be all smiles today, tomorrow it’s time to get down to business. Fall camp will open, and so will the competition to earn a spot on the starting lineup. For the first time in a long time, you can’t pencil in probable starters based on production last year.

With a defensive unit that is so young and inexperienced, every play called in practice could determine a spot on the depth chart. Every missed assignment, missed tackle, and dropped interception will be scrutinized by coaches. At the end of every day, these players will barely be able to move.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers offense will fine tune their game. They will work to perfect their craft at each position. Taylor Martinez will continue to work on his throwing motion. Kenny Bell and Ameer Abdullah will help guide their younger counterparts to reach a higher level of play. Tim Beck will unveil new plays that he developed in his underground laboratory of offensive genius.

Coaches will spend every waking moment reviewing film, accessing the qualities and flaws of each player in order to put together a rotation that will give The Huskers their best chance at success. They will obsess over what linebackers will play at Buck, which defensive lineman are strong enough to take on the massive lines in The Big Ten, and the young players who can make an impact on special teams.

Those of us who cover Nebraska Cornhuskers football will be watching closely to see who is getting first team reps. We will be in our own secret laboratories, typing as much as we can to provide quality coverage.

Fans of The Huskers will be watching, reading, and listening to as much coverage as they can, waiting for kickoff to get here.

Fan Day is the unofficial beginning of football season. Enjoy the day Husker fans.
