Depth Chart Watch 2012 (Wide Receivers)

For the next 20 days HuskerCorner.com will be bringing you an in-depth look at each position for 2012. We will break down  who we think is the front runner for the starting position, the player on the front runners heels  for the starting spot, and a freshman who could make a splash.

Nebraska’s receiving core may be the most talented group of young receivers in the nation. The emergence of Kenny Bell, and the development of Jamal Turner helped the progression of quarterback Taylor Martinez in 2011. As they develop, Nebraska’s offense will continue to grow.

The Front Runner

Kenny Bell caught 32 passes for 461 yards, and 3 touchdowns. Bell rushed the ball 3 times for 100 yards and 1 touchdown. He developed as Martinez’s go to receiver on deep passes. Bells speed pushed him past corners on deep routs, Bell has arguably the best hands on the team.

As a redshirt freshmen Bell established himself as a player that Big Ten corners need to prepare for.

Number One Contender

Jamal Turner led Nebraska in receptions, and receiving yards through the first seven games. After that seventh game, Turner did not see much playing time, nor did he have another catch all season. Rumors flew about him being hurt, in trouble with the coaches, and other stories. No one knows the real reason behind Turner being benched.

If Turner can come back from that experience, and produce like he did at the beginning of the 2011 season, he and Bell could be a huge threat to every Big Ten defense.

Turner finished the season with 15 catches for 243 yards, but he came to Nebraska to play quarterback. If Turner gets the chance to switch back to quarterback he will do so, and he probably should. He was an All-American quarterback in high school.

Incoming Freshman

Lombard, Il., Montini High School’s Jordan Westerkamp caught 91 passes for 1,659 yards, and 29 touchdowns. He started at the varsity level every year since his junior year. He is 6-foot-2,195 lbs., and is expected to play early.

In mid december he thought about switching his commitment to Notre Dame. After visiting South Bend, he decided that Nebraska was the place for him and plans on faxing his National Letter of Intent to Lincoln on Wednesday.
