Around Husker Nation – The Biggest Blowout at Devaney
By Editorial Staff
Nebraska sports are starting to get into the full swing of things. With only baseball and softball left to start, there’s a lot to catch up on throughout Husker Nation. Husker Corner keeps you informed.
Men’s Basketball (10-9, 2-6 Big Ten) – Last Game: 45-79 L vs. Ohio State
Last week started off on a great note for the Huskers. They took down No. 13 Indiana in Lincoln. Then Ohio State came to town and handed Nebraska the worst loss in Devaney Center history. Any confidence gained against Indiana is likely gone after a 34-point loss to the Buckeyes.
Women’s Basketball (16-3, 5-2) – Last Game: 64-49 W at Minnesota
The No. 20 Huskers finally got their first win after dropping back to back games. Nebraska, who had won nine straight games, took down Minnesota to get back on their feet after losing to Ohio State. The win over the Golden Gophers, in which Jordan Hooper scored 23 points, helped improve their conference record to 5-2.
Wrestling (12-1) – Last Match: 24-9 W vs. Purdue
The Huskers responded well after losing to No. 2 Iowa last week. Since the loss, the Huskers beat conference foes Indiana and Purdue. As the end of the season approaches, the Huskers are catching fire. Currently ranked at the No. 7 spot, Nebraska is considered one of the two or three best teams in the Big Ten.
Track and Field – Men’s – 1st, Women’s – 1st; adidas Classic (Sat. Jan. 21)
All-American shot putter Luke Pinkelman automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with the throw that won him Saturday’s meet. The Huskers won every field event on the women’s side and all but two on the men’s side en route to winning both the men’s and the women’s meets, the first scored meets of the year, overcoming Houston’s dominant sprinters.
Women’s Swimming and Diving (2-2) – Last Meet: 148-152 L vs. Illinois
Nebraska’s swimmers lost in another tight match, this time by only four points to the Fighting Illini. While the Huskers won the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, second and third place finishes by the Illini were enough to keep the Huskers from winning.
Gymnastics – W vs. Air Force (Men’s)/ W at Iowa State (Women’s)
No. 10 men’s gymnastics exacted revenge on Air Force, who beat them last week at the Rocky Mountain Open. They hosted the Falcons and ended up coming away with a victory of just 4.8 points.
No. 1 women’s gymnastics handled their first week at the top spot well, defeating Iowa State in Ames. Last week, the Huskers sat at No. 6 before defeating Denver in Lincoln.
