Oscars For Huskers

Tonight’s Academy Awards got me in the mood for handing out some awards of my own. So what we have here are the First Annual Oscars for Huskers presented by HuskerCorner…

Best Picture nominees:

Best Picture Winner: Dejon Gomes sacking Blaine Gabbert. It came in what was probably the biggest win of the season in Nebraska, from one of my personal favorite players, on one of the most hated players in Big Red Country. And it looks like he made it hurt.

Best Actor: Ndamukong Suh – No Husker had a finer year than last year’s Heisman wi…(wait he didn’t win? What a joke!) 3rd runner up. His first year in the NFL earned him Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year honors (over Sam Bradford), a near unanimous NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year (48 of 50 votes), 1st team All-Pro selection, and was voted a Pro Bowl starter. He has a chance to Ndominate the league for the next 10 years.

Best Actress: Taylor Martinez – No, he didn’t win the actress award because of his somewhat-girly whining after being pulled from a couple games this year. It’s purely because he has a girl’s name. Well, and maybe a little because of the whining. But, like it or not, Nebraska football is likely attached to T-Mart for the next three years. Lets just hope he can recapture the T-Magic he displayed the first half of the season.

Best Director: Dr. Tom Osborne – Narrowly edges out his buddy Bo Pelini for the award for his resurrection of the football team since taking over as Athletic Director at Nebraska, as well as his efforts in trying to revive the basketball program, which feels just a few years away from legitimizing itself.

Best Supporting Actor: Lance Jeter – Earns the supporting award because of Basketball’s secondary nature in Lincoln. Jeter’s senior leadership has paved the way for one of the most successful Basketball seasons in recent years, although it still probably won’t be enough to get what has eluded the program since 1998, an NCAA Tournament berth.

Best Supporting Actress: Alex Henery – Lets face it, kickers are kinda girly, but that’s no knock on Henery, who was easily the best kicker in the country this past year, even though he got Lou Hoza’d. Hell, I was disappointed whenever he didn’t perfectly split the uprights, even from 50 yards out. He should be the first kicker taken in this year’s NFL Draft, which should ease the pain of receiving the lady’s prize.

Best Original Screenplay: Nebraska Cornhuskers 70, Texas Longhorns 67 – It appeared that all hope was lost on Nebraska ever topping the hated Longhorns, but the Basketball team came through in a big way just last week. Although it didn’t erase the pain from October, and it didn’t propel Husker Hoops to where we had hoped, it still may end up costing the Longhorns a Big 12 Title.

Best Adapted Screenplay: Texas A&M Aggies 9, Nebraska Cornhuskers 6 – Yes, it happened, but it was most definitely pre-scripted. 16 penalties to 2. The worst Roughing the Passer call I’ve ever seen. This was the night that put a Big Red target squarely on Dan Beebe’s back, which drove most Husker fans to different boiling points throughout the rest of the season. Also, led to one of my best write-ups ever.

Best Achievement in Editing: Nebraska Cornhuskers 59, Oklahoma Sooners 58 – With Oklahoma trailing by three points, Cade Davis hit what appeared to be the game-tying shot with 3.8 seconds left in the game, only for it to be (correctly) ruled a two pointer. Only the Sooners never realized, and the Huskers hurried down the court and threw up a shot at the buzzer, ending the game. The refs reviewed the call after it was all over, but the call stood.

Best Foreign Language Film: Even though this is a bit anti-Nebraska, it still wins the award…

That’s all from the First Annual Oscars for Huskers presented by HuskerCorner. Hopefully, this helped you relive some of the better moments in the year that was Nebraska. And to do so in much better time than the real Oscar awards tonight. Goodnight everybody!
