Nebraska Football: Husker Seniors Shine on Their Day vs Maryland
Nebraska football got a much-needed win against the Maryland Terrapins, and it was the seniors showing their stuff in their last home game in Lincoln.
On a day when not only the Nebraska football seniors were honored, but late punter Sam Foltz as well, the Huskers scored first and didn’t look back in a 28-7 domination of Maryland on Senior Day, and it was some of the seniors who made the biggest contributions to this game.
Starting with senior quarterback Ryker Fyfe – playing in place of the injured Tommy Armstrong – who did everything right, and looked as confident and poised as someone who’d been starting all season long.
Fyfe finished the game 23 of 37 for 220 yards and one touchdown pass, as well as 10 rushing yards, and was in command of the offense all day. His favorite target? Senior wideout Jordan Westerkamp, who snagged eight catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.
Another senior who balled-out today was running back Terrell Newby, who carried the ball 22 times for 98 yards and three huge touchdowns.
But the day belonged to the Blackshirt defense and senior safety Nathan Gerry, who made the game miserable for Maryland freshman quarterback Max Bortenschlager – sacked five times by the Huskers, and harried in the pocked all day long.
Had almost six tackles not been missed on a 92-yard touchdown play on a tunnel screen, the Nebraska defense would have held the Terps without scoring a touchdown for the 3rd straight game.
While the game was important, and the team was focused, it was an emotional day for players and fans, beginning with the Sam Foltz remembrance.

The important thing about the win is that it keeps Nebraska’s slim hopes of reaching a Big Ten championship game alive. Big Red needs a lot of help, but it all starts with winning their own games. Here’s hoping the rest of the conference keeps things alive.
The Cornhuskers will close out the Nebraska football regular season next week on the road at Iowa, a team who has come on strong defensively in the last few weeks. Even if Armstrong isn’t ready to go, fans should feel comfortable having Fyfe at the ready.
