When the Nebraska football team tries to take vengeance for an embarrassing loss last year to Purdue, they’ll be doing it without the services of Cethan Carter and Jordan Westerkamp.

This will be the second straight game both players are expected to miss after they were both injured in the Huskers’ game against Illinois. We saw what the offense did against Indiana and it appears that Tommy having two of his top targets out does indeed affect how he plays.

That’s not particularly good news, considering Purdue’s offense has not really been the cause of it’s problems this year. Boilermaker quarterback David Blough has had his share of bad games, but when he’s playing well, he can light up the scoreboard.

At the same time he can also be forced into making a mistake, as his five-interception game against Cincinnati earlier in the year can attest. The problem, for the Nebraska football team is Blough is coming off his best game, throwing for more than 458 yards and five touchdowns against the Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Boilermakers lost that game, and because it, they apparently lost their coach, bu the team’s offense looks to be getting better as the season goes along. In fact, following a blowout 51-7 loss to Maryland, Purdue has scored 34 and 35 points. Easily their best two-game stretch of the season offensively.

Defensively, the Boilermakers have had a rough go of it. Recently fired Darell Hazell brought in former Nebraska football coach Ross Els over the offseason to be the team’s defensive coordinator. Els has responded by seeing his defense allow 30 or more points in four of the team’s six games.

Els’ defense has also been responsible for allowing 31 and 49 points in the last two weeks, one a win and one a loss for the Boilermakers. Against Illinois, Purdue allowed 499 total yards. Against the Hawkeyes they surrendered 520.

In other words, Ross Els has not, at least not yet, fixed what has ailed Purdue’s defense in the last few years. This is why it’s even more discouraging that the Nebraska football team is going into the game short handed.

Tommy Armstrong looked off kilter against Indiana without his number one wide receiver and his starting tight end. It’s possible the game against Purdue is going to be a bit of a shootout. It will be interesting to see if the Nebraska football team can come up with some better answers offensively this time around.
