Nebraska Baseball Forced To Play Regionals Waiting Game Following B1G Bounce

The Nebraska baseball team finds itself in the uncomfortable position of wondering whether they ended up doing enough to get an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals.

The Cornhuskers entered the Big Ten Conference Tournament as the hottest team in the conference and were then bounced out of the tourney in just two games. There’s plenty of blame to go around when it comes to how the team couldn’t manage a single victory despite the fact that they were the home team in the tournament.

The pitching was good but nowhere near as good as it had been just a week before. The offense was almost non-existent, and while the absence of Scott Schreiber played a part, the team had found a way to win without him in the final two games of the Indiana series.

Head coach Darin Erstad gets some blame too, as he certainly didn’t seem to coach the Nebraska baseball team in their second game in a way where he seemed to understand the season might be on the line. All that is over now though, and the Nebraska baseball players, and fans now need to turn their attention to whether or not their season is over.

More from Husker Corner

Going into the weekend, several things needed to happen for the Huskers to feel confident they were going to get an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals. Sadly, it seems as if the baseball universe was as against the Nebraska baseball team getting in as their most recent opponents. There were some massive upsets, such as William & Mary winning their conference tournament, as well as some smaller upsets, like Xavier beating Creighton that will make the Huskers’ path harder.

Now, at least one projection for the 64 teams that are going to be making regionals has left the Nebraska baseball team off the list. D1baseball.com claims the only team to make the Regionals from the Big Ten besides Ohio State, which has garnered an at-large bid is Minnesota. There is certainly some debate as to whether the Golden Gophers deserve a slot over the Nebraska baseball team.

Minnesota finished a half game ahead of the Cornhuskers in the regular season standings and was bounced in two games as well. The Gophers’ current RPI is 50 compared to the Huskers’ 48. In other words, it’s possible Nebraska has a real shot at getting in. Their chances aren’t nearly as good as they would have been if the team had managed to win a game or two in the conference tournament.
