I know this isn’t technically HUSKER news but it’s GREAT news for Omaha’s Mavericks! The UNO Maverick hockey team will be headed to Beantown to play in the Frozen Four! This is the 1st time in school history they have made it to the FF!  They defeated Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Sunday night in South Bend, Indiana, 4-0 to qualify and move on.

Also competing in the Frozen Four will be Boston University, Providence College and University of North Dakota. With UNO and UND in the Frozen Four, 2 teams from the NCHC (National Collegiate Hockey Conference) division are competing against 2 teams from the Hockey East division.

Providence Friars are headed to the Frozen Four for the first time in 30 years. They defeated the University of Denver 4-1 in the East Regional Final. The Friars had 4 players make the All-East Regional Team: forwards Shane Luke and Noel Acciari (also named Most Outstanding Player), Defenseman Tom Parisi and goaltender Jon Gillies. This should be some epic hockey in Boston!

The goalie for the Mavericks was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament and to the All Member team. Ryan Massa, a senior from Littleton, Colorado, was OUTSTANDING at the net keeping RIT from getting scores out of the many shots they took. He had 40 saves for the game. UNO is now 20-12-6 in it’s 3rd year under coach Dean Blais.

It was a nail biter of a game through 2 periods with no score. RIT had outshot UNO 22-19 during the first two periods and there were plenty of chances for both teams to score but it took until the 3rd period before things fell apart for RIT. Scoring the goals for the Mavs in the 3rd period were freshman Jake Randolph, Austin Ortega, and Justin Parizek. David Pope added an extra empty netter to close things out.

The first game will be on April 9th at the TD Garden against Providence at 4 pm CDT, televised on ESPN2. We wish them good luck and GO BEAT PROVIDENCE!
