Huskers beat Creighton 5-1 in front of record crowd!

Thanks to Mother Nature and a hearty Nebraska/Creighton rivalry, a record crowd od 7,319 people watched Red and Blue battle it out on the diamond Tuesday night.  GOOOO BIG REEEDDDD! Huskers finished out their homestand (15-1) with a WIN tonight, 5-1!

Husker pitcher Garrett King did an amazing job in 8 innings on the mound, striking out a total of 5 Bluejays. I can tell you that Creighton started Jeff Albrecht and then switched pitchers to about a ka-gillian times! (ok 8 in total). King only allowed 2 hits. He also ended the 12-game hitting streak by Creighton’s Kevin Connolly. Big Red pitching didn’t allow a hit until the top of the 5th inning.

Big Red closer Jeff Chestnut came in to finish it off. He helped his own effort by grounding out the first batter, striking out the second batter, and then Schrieber logged in the final out unassisted.

Huskers scored early in the 1st and 2nd, and then just maintained. Offensively the story was Jake Placzek with a double and a triple, and 2 RBIs! Blake Headley also doubled (2 for 5) and Ryan Boldt was 3 for 4, and a walk. In total the Huskers had 11 hits. The bats were solid and the offense was also helped out by a couple of errors by the Bluejays.

More from Husker Corner

If the Husker pitching stays like this past couple of weeks, and no one gets injured (knocking wood) then it will make it VERY tough for the upcoming Maryland Terrapins in the series this weekend. Husker Corner will have a scouting report before the series starts. MD is supposed to win the B1G Ten so this is considered a HUGE road series for Big Red.

If Mother Nature cooperates tomorrow, the Huskers will play University of Omaha’s Mavericks at 6:35 weather permitting. (most likely not going to happen) In the meantime, stay tuned to Husker Corner for more baseball news and GO BIG RED!!!
