It’s all quiet on the range now for the Nebraska Rifle team as they take their holiday break. The first half of the 2014 – 15 is now complete. The Huskers are ranked #6 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association Poll. With a record of 6 -3, the squad rests their aim and their trigger fingers in anticipation of the rest of the 2015 season.

The 2014 – 15  group are all returning starters from last season. This year’s squad consists of 8 highly competitive women led by senior, Kelsey Hansen. Three are All-Americans – junior, Denise Martin and sophomores, Lauren Phillips and Rachel Martin. Rounding out the team is sophomore, Jaycee Carter plus a trio of juniors – Alexandrea Lorentz, Marissa Major and Magdelena Mical. Huskers come to Lincoln from across the country to participate in both air rifle and small bore competitions.

New this season to the Rifle team is the coach.  Ashley Rose – MacAllister was named to lead the Cornhusker team July 23, 2014. She arrived in Lincoln to lend her expertise to a team that finish fifth in the 2014 NCAA championship.  Coach Rose – MacAllister, a Kentucky native, comes to Nebraska after serving as assistant coach during the 2013 – 14 at the University of Kentucky. Her collegiate resume’ is impressive. A graduate of Murray State,  she earned a letter each of her four years and served as team captain of their Rifle team. She also served for five years beginning in 2009 during the summer with the Civilian Marksmanship Program.  2012 – 14 she served as the assistant director to this important camp which teaches shooting skills to junior and senior high students.

Rifle became on official sport at the University of Nebraska during the 1998 – 1999 season. The NCAA actually lists rifle as a man’s sport but at Nebraska it is a women’s sport. Our team practices and holds their meets in the  lower level of the Military and Naval Sciences Building (ROTC).  In April 2006, NU became only the second university in the nation to add electronic targets to its range. This allows shooters to aim for only ONE target instead of 10 different targets. It also benefits from movable target carriers so targets may be placed anywhere from zero up to 50 feet.
