Husker Football: Nebraska Gains Miami Long Snapper Transfer

When long snapper Gabe Miller went down with an injury, the Husker football team lost a crucial part of all special teams units. Without a long snapper, the Nebraska Cornhuskers were looking at a litany of problems from bad punts to shanked PATs.

Salvation may have come by way of the Miami Hurricanes.

According to Sean Callahan of HuskersOnline.com, a young man named Paul Kelly was wearing scarlet and cream instead of the ‘Canes colors today. The significance of this? He’s a long snapper.

The news gets even better regarding Kelly’s transfer.

According to a HuskersOnline article regarding his move from Coral Gables to Lincoln:

Kelly graduated from UM this past December, so he would be immediately eligible to play in the 2014 season as a graduate transfer.

Both backup long snapper Josh Faulkenberry and starting safety Nathan Gerry were working in relief of Miller depending on the situation. That has apparently changed, too according to Callahan.

This begs the question of just how bad Miller’s injury is. Since the Huskers brought in another long snapper and Gerry now goes back to focusing on his studies as a safety full-time, where does this leave the sophomore from Mishawaka, IN.?

Since Bo Pelini and staff were willing to scour the country for a long snapper that could play immediately, clearly they wanted someone who could allow Gerry to get back to work with only Charlton Warren.

While nothing’s officially been released about Miller’s condition, he hasn’t participated in drills or practices since his injury. That’s not the best omen for a guy whose position demands he has a healthy back.

In the meantime, the Huskers have another true blue long snapper who’ll go up against his former team on September 20.
