Husker Football: Husker Corner’s Monday Mailbag (7/22/14)

facebooktwitterreddit

Yes, I realize that today is not actually Monday. However, I spent most of my Monday tearing through the heart of B1G/MAC territory back home to The Good Life.

After one of the best sleeps I’ve ever had, it’s time to get back to bidness. Let’s get to your questions.

I sure do. Considering the Huskers’ “Fan Experience” promotion blitz that Ithat’s clearly being set up to blow people away, it wouldn’t shock me at all to see them revealed during Fan Day. I expect the hype to begin any day now.

Right now, I feel Nebraska has a good chance with Jackson right along with those who’ve put in their recent two cents, but to discuss your question, let’s look at the main threats Tim Beck’s going up against:

Auburn: Already has a four-star QB commit in Tyler Queen.

Clemson: Has two QB commits in Tucker Israel and Kelly Bryant

Florida State: They likely have Deondre Francois locked up.

Georgia: From what I understand, the Dawgs may just straight up not take a QB.

Ohio State: Looks like the Bucks are putting all their chips into getting All-Everything QB Torrance Gibson.

South Carolina: Spurrier wanted four-star Lorenzo Nunez and got him. Nuff said.

West Virginia: Has two QB commits in David Sills and Chris Chugunov.

Looking at all of this and the love Nebraska’s giving Jackson now along with Dillman’s future at QB in doubt, Jackson would essentially be The Man.

As far as Doherty goes, his primary recruiter is John Garrison who, if you haven’t noticed, is on a flippin’ tear lately. I do believe Nebraska wants him in their pocket. Unfortunately, guessing the commit time’s tough right now. He could be brought in on an unofficial or he may take in the Big Red’s season opener against FAU.

In either case, I expect a commit when he trips or shortly afterwards.

This is an excellent question/topic and I agree with everyone who suggests there be an early signing period. There are some kids who just want to get the process over and enjoy their senior/year of high school. I say good on them if they truly want that.

For example, current incoming Husker football recruit Peyton Newell was solid to Nebraska from the get go and had to put up with everyone calling him throughout the cycle. Not a knock on those calling as it’s their job and they have to put food on the table.

However, if Newell signs in, let’s say August, the sites (and recruiting staffs) can turn their attention elsewhere.

My suggested early signing date would be the first Wednesday in August. Right before (or as) fall camps are starting. That gives prospects enough time to take some unofficial visits, mull their options and go from there.

Brandon: Can’t give that away, however I’ll tell you that I look to stick to the offense before eventually slipping over to the D.
