Huskers Football Road Race Aims to Help Yet Again

Fans of Huskers football big and small are known to rally around their school, their team, and any causes that are being pushed.

Nothing proves this more than the ‘Team Jack’ movement spearheaded by Rex Burkhead and his partnership with Jack Hoffman and the rest of the Hoffman family.

On July 20, 2014, the Nebraska chapter of Uplifting Athletes will be hosting their second annual ‘Nebraska Football Uplifting Athletes’ road race.

The student-athlete movement raises money for Pediatric Brain Cancer research.

There are two separate runs involved: a one mile Fun Run designed especially for children and a 5K race that traverses from Memorial Stadium to the Devaney Center, then through the North Bottoms neighborhood before finishing back in front of the stadium.

Along the route, runners will be guided and cheered on by Husker football players.

Participation in the Fun Run costs $25 and begins at 8:00 a.m while the 5K costs $30 and starts at 8:30 a.m. All entrants will receive a t-shirt and wristband.

Uplifting Athletes began in 2007 with the Huskers chapter being founded in 2012.

Burkhead was awarded the 2012 Uplifting Athletes Rare Disease Champion Award, and just last year, another Husker took home the award in C.J. Zimmerer.

The award is given yearly to a leader in college football who has made “a positive and lasting impact on the rare disease community.”

I was able to take part along with around 700 other people in the first Uplifting Athletes Road Race. This year, the group looks to swarm Lincoln with runners for the cause.

The fundraising goal is set at $30,000 with the raised total sitting at just over $9,000.

Please consider donating as all money will go to Pediatric Brain Cancer Research. Also, take some time to learn about and consider donating to another young Huskers fan’s battle.

His name is Noah. Noah is battling a form of cancer called Neuroblastoma.

Nebraska fans, I implore you to give even $5 if you can and show the world yet again why the Huskers are known as the greatest fans in college football.

You can register for the race by clicking here. If you are unable to attend the race, but still wish to give you can do so via my donation page or any other runner’s donation pages found at Uplifting Athletes’ web site.
