Heisman Thoughts

facebooktwitterreddit

This year is one of the most obvious, clear-cut choices for the Heisman Trophy winner of my lifetime.

Of couse, it’s not as obvious as last year’s choice should have been, when Ndamukong Suh dominated College Football in a way I’ve never seen before.

Maybe this year’s ceremony will help me finally get over last year’s travesty. After all, we are a year removed from the injustice right? Ehh…maybe.

So, Cam Newton, come on down, and stiff arm all your haters on the way to the podium.

I understand that some of you out there don’t want to see Newton win the prestigious trophy because of the alleged scandal where Newton and his daddy seeked money when deciding which school to attend.

Wait, so a College Football player, who should be getting paid for making his school millions of dollars, may or may not have accepted money for his family?

Wake me when you have some real news. I’m sorry, but I couldn’t care less if he took money. I went to KU and saw most every athlete driving a relatively new SUV around campus. Do I think the student athletes with schedules so busy they couldn’t even dream of maintaining a job paid for those? Yea, right.

For the record, I am in favor of paying athletes, given the work they put in to their activity, the money it brings to the school, and the lack of opportunity they have to keep a job outside of school. This is a personal belief, and not a justification for Newton’s actions.

However, if you are naive enough to believe that players aren’t getting money under the table all over the nation, then you are in for one hell of a Christmas, when Santa Claus comes tumbling down your chimney.

The other argument being made is that they don’t want to face the embarassment of taking the Heisman back from Cam Newton, if it were to come out that he was, in fact, guilty.

I would tell these voters that it wouldn’t be any more embarassing then when they gave the 1995 Heisman Trophy to Ohio State’s Eddie George over one of the greatest College Football players of all time, Tommie Frazier.

The Heisman rebounded from that, they could rebound from this.

Husker Corner’s Heisman Ballot:

  1. Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
  2. Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma St.
  3. LaMichael James, RB, Oregon
  4. Kellen Moore, QB, Boise St.
