When the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team secured the commitment of Georgia Tech transfer quarterback Jeff Sims, there were a lot of questions about what that meant for the return of Casey Thompson. Those questions were answered on Monday night.

While Casey didn’t address the rumors himself, his father, former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Charles Thompson made it very clear. Casey is coming back and expects to compete for the starting QB job in 2023.

Of course, before he can compete for the job, he’ll have to rehab a throwing shoulder that his father says was bothering him for most of the 2022 season. The implication is that some of the quarterback’s struggles were due to the injury and that eventually he’ll be healthy and better than ever. Then the quarterback battle will begin in earnest.

Sims might have the leg up in the spring. But it’s a safe bet the starting job won’t be decided until the fall.

Other Nebraska Cornhuskers News

While Casey is coming back, tight-end Travis Vokolek is not. The tight end announced on Twitter what most had expected. He’s played his final snaps in college football. He’ll now be chasing his dream to play in the NFL.

Vokolek wasn’t the only Nebraska Cornhuskers athlete to say goodbye on Monday. Volleyball star Nicklin Hames also gave some parting words on social media. Hames has been one of the most popular and visible members of this generation of John Cook’s team and she’ll definitely be missed.

The Nebraska football team had a heck of a Monday with three commits in offensive lineman Jason Maciejczak, 4-star edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen and Gretna offensive lineman Mason Goldman all gave their pledge to the Huskers just ahead of signing day.

Big news is on the way for Nebraska Cornhuskers fans in the coming days.
