March 4 marks the official beginning of Nebraska football spring practice. There will be eyes on every position, but there are going to be some special surprises to come out of a few.
As mentioned before, spring ball is a time when momentum can be built heading into summer conditioning and into fall camp where playing time is eventually earned.
In the meantime, players are going to look a little rusty to begin things and no, they’re probably not going to resemble much of a football team for a day or two.
However, by the time the Spring Game rolls around on Easter weekend, while you may not see a finely-tuned machine, you’ll get a glimpse of what 2017 has in store and likely some surprises that stick (We still love you, Austin Rose).
With all of that in mind, here are five Huskers that could gain solid momentum early on and find their way climbing the depth chart as a result (in no particular order):
Wide Receiver JD Spielman
When your highly-regarded wide receivers coach refers to you as “Taz” (as in Tasmanian Devil), it should speak volumes about what you’re capable of on the field.
Such is the case with Spielman.
The 5-9 180-pound redshirt freshman’s time to shine is now and don’t be surprised if he’s one of the main guys dialed up for reverses and jet sweeps. His speed, acceleration and field vision served him very well as he got used to the speed of the college game.
He could very well be used in screens and easily create mismatches that leave defensive backs’ heads spinning. He’ll be a challenge for Bob Diaco’s new defense to get ahold of, but what’s that old saying? You use steel to sharpen steel, and one friend sharpens another.
