Cory Schlesinger became a bit of a folk hero, thanks to his two incredible touchdown runs against the Miami Hurricanes in the game that got Tom Osborne his first national title.

While he might be best known for those runs, he was an effective runner all season and came very, very close to attaining Rathman’s unheard of yards per carry. Cory didn’t have the same kind of yards in that 1994 season, but he did average 7.2 YPC.
That 1994 season also saw him run for more than 450 yards and four touchdowns. There’s very little doubt that Cory’s real prowess was as a blocker for the team’s stable of incredibly talented running backs.
He had enough talent as a blocker and a runner that after his college career ended, he was drafted by the Detroit Lions. Once he got into the pros, his special talent group allowed him to be a Lion for 12 years. During that time, he blocked for one of the best running backs in the history of the game in Barry Sanders.

Once his player career ended, Schlesinger set down roots in Michigan and turned to teaching at a local high school. He’s married and has a gaggle of children.
