Nebraska football needs a big year from the veteran kicker.

You hear me talk all the time about who needs to step up over the course of the season. This particular player needs to step up not only during the season, but during spring ball as well. After what was a rough year for the special-teams, kicker Barrett Pickering needs to prove that he can be relied upon.

Let’s be real here. Special teams was a disaster last year for Nebraska football. He missed the first seven games of the season, and Nebraska football is forced to use a rotation of kickers. Perhaps the most impressive out of those kickers was walk-on Matt Waldoch. However, Pickering needs to prove that he can still be dependable after injury.

For the record, I am rooting for him to succeed. However, it is a lot easier said than done. If Pickering can stabilize Nebraska’s kicking game, that would be ideal. After coming off a solid freshman season in which he made 10 field goals, he is going to need to make even more in 2020. Last year, Nebraska football had to play all four downs. That really put them at a disadvantage, but they simply could not trust the kicking game.

The work begins in spring ball. If there is anybody who needs to have a strong spring, it is Pickering. If Nebraska can really count on him moving forward, this would be a great development. He showed a little bit of promise last season when he hit one-of-two field goals against Indiana. However, I would love to see him be able to put things together again for the entirety of the season.

It would be great to see him get back on track simply because he showed so much promise as a freshman. Nebraska football needs him to be solid in order for the kicking game to be productive.
